Tavaziva worked in partnership with the Royal Academy of Dance and Caius House Youth Centre to produce an exciting dance and music-making production project with local young people.
Journeying Between was led by Bawren Tavaziva and Royal Academy’s Step into Dance Programme Company Leader Michael Joseph and musician Monica Dhinn AKA Rory Sky. Original music and choreography was created in collaboration with the young people for a performance at Caius House. As well as an outdoor photography shoot with award winning photographer and film maker Jevan Chowdhury which was exhibited to the public on Monday the 18th of February.
Week 1: Musical soundscape composition
Bawren is a percussionist and creates music and soundscapes for Tavaziva’s professional productions. The first week of the project took place at Caius House using their recording facilities to produce a music track for the second dance week. Bawren and our Music Assistant Monica Dhinn spent 5 afternoons creating an original piece of music incorporating many unique styles taken from the young people.
Week 2: Dance and choreography
Bawren collaborated with Michael to produce a piece of choreography taking influence from the musical soundscape composed in week one and the theme of Journeying Between. On the fourth day of the dance week there was a film and photography shoot led by Jevan Chowdhury which journeyed to locations between RAD HQ and Tavaziva HQ, including Caius House and the riverfront. The photographs formed part of an exhibition in Wandsworth in October. The participants were taught his trademark fusion of African contemporary dance which was performed at Caius House on the final day of the project to an audience on friends, family and invited guests.
